"The truth is that physical exercise can help you relax and handle your physical or emotional stress." Plain Talk About Stress, Louis E. Kopolow, M.D.
Stress is natural. In simple terms, stress is the normal reaction of our bodies to any change. It is with us all the time. You gear up for a tough job or life event and then let life go on. This is positive stress.
Work-related stress is the adverse reaction people have to excessive pressure or other types of demand placed on them.
Just as a muscle needs to be challenged with increasing resistance, it also needs a period of recovery to stimulate growth, and so does our brain.
What is unnatural is not to return to a relaxed state. If we don't relax once the challenge has been met we experience negative stress. Stress becomes chronic when we stayed geared up as though everything were a case of life and death.
DESK GYM is designed to help you balance negative stress with positive stress. Tai chi, yoga, meditation, progressive relaxation, deep breathing or visualization exercises are also helpful techniques.
